How do I transfer a recorded video from a HDV tape to my computer?

I am using a Canon XH A1, please help me!!!

The Canon XHA1 is a miniDV tape based camcorder. You already know this.

To get to the video in the camcorder (miniDV tape) to a computer, you need a Firewire cable (not USB) to connect the camcorder’s DV/HDV terminal (not USB) to the computer’s firewire port (not USB). You did not tell us which computer hardware you are using. Firewire, IEEE1394, DV and i.LINK are all the same thing.

USB will not import High Quality, HDV format video. USB-to-firewire cable/converter/adapter things will not work. In this case – the USB connection will get you to the flash memory used only for stills (or storing XHA1 preferences settings. If your computer has no firewire port, hopefully it has an available expansion slot so you can add one.

The XHA1 has a 6-pin firewire port. Since we don’t know what firewire port your computer has, we don’t know if the other side of the cable (connecting the computer) should be 4-pin, 6-pin or 9-pin firewire… so we can’t tell you which cable to get.

You *could* use the camcorder’s AV-out connection to a USB-based analog/digital converter (see Elgato, Roxio, Pinnacle – Dazzle, Hauppage… lots of others)… Video quality using this analog conversion method will be poor and not high quality DV/HDV format video.

With the camcorder correctly connected to the computer (above) and the Power Dial in “Play” or VCR mode, launch the video editor in the computer and Capture or Import the video. It depends on the computer and importing software or video editor you are using. Many times the imported DV/HDV format video is saved to the video editor’s format – then, when you are finished editing, you render the finished project to whatever format you want – AVI, WMV, MOV, MP4… lot of others. It depends on what your audience needs to playback…

Windows is bundled with low-end, basically featureless, MovieMaker. Most versions of MovieMaker cannot deal with importing HDV format video. Move up to Sony Vegas, Adobe Premiere, Avid – several others. If you are using a Macintosh, HDV support goes back to iMovieHD ‘06. The current version of iMovie is ‘09. Final Cut (in various versions) can also deal with HDV very easily.
