Dynamic resource allocation and stochastic scheduling strategies in wireless networks.

Dynamic resource allocation and stochastic scheduling strategies in wireless networks.

$49.99

Wireless networks ushered an age of ubiquitous and pervasive computing. However, they greatly complicate resource allocation and scheduling problems as compared to traditional wired networks. The main reason is that wireless signals not only span multiple dimensions (e.g., time, space, frequency and power) simultaneously, making various types of resources correlated, but also introduce uncertainty due to time-varying wireless channels. In this dissertation, we investigate dynamic resource allocation and stochastic scheduling strategies through different theoretical frameworks for several types of wireless networks with specific objectives and constraints.;We first design a joint node sleep and orientation scheduling policy for directional sensors (e.g., image, camera, radar sensors), in order to balance two paramount but conflicting objectives, i.e., energy-efficiency and quality of coverage, in surveillance wireless sensor networks. Specifically, given a set of random deployed directional sensors, we propose Maximum Coverage with Minimum Sensors (MCMS) problem of combinatorial nature, where coverage in terms of the number of targets to be covered is maximized whereas the number of sensors to be activated is minimized. We present its exact Integer Linear Programming (ILP) formulation and an approximate centralized greedy algorithm (CGA) solution. These centralized solutions are used as baselines for later comparison. Next, we provide a distributed greedy algorithm (DGA) solution. By incorporating a measure of the sensors’ residual energy into DGA, we further develop a Sensing Neighborhood Cooperative Sleeping (SNCS) protocol, which performs adaptive scheduling at a larger time scale. We evaluate the properties of the proposed solutions and protocols through extensive simulations. Moreover, for the case of circular coverage, we compare against the best known existing coverage algorithm.;We then design an opportunistic packet forwarding scheme, in order to adapt to

Fundamental study of FC-72 pool boiling surface temperature fluctuations and bubble behavior.

Fundamental study of FC-72 pool boiling surface temperature fluctuations and bubble behavior.

$49.99

A heater designed to monitor surface temperature fluctuations during pool boiling experiments while the bubbles were simultaneously being observed has been fabricated and tested. The heat source was a transparent indium tin oxide (ITO) layer commercially deposited on a fused quartz substrate. Four copper-nickel thin film thermocouples (TFTCs) on the heater surface measured the surface temperature, while a thin layer of sapphire or fused silica provided electrical insulation between the TFTCs and the ITO. The TFTCs were micro-fabricated using the liftoff process to deposit the nickel and copper metal films. The TFTC elements were 50 mum wide and overlapped to form a 25 mum by 25 mum junction. TFTC voltages were recorded by a DAQ at a sampling rate of 50 kHz. A high-speed CCD camera recorded bubble images from below the heater at 2000 frames/second. A trigger sent to the camera by the DAQ synchronized the bubble images and the surface temperature data.;As the bubbles and their contact rings grew over the TFTC junction, correlations between bubble behavior and surface temperature changes were demonstrated. On the heaters with fused silica insulation layers, 1–2°C temperature drops on the order of 1 ms occurred as the contact ring moved over the TFTC junction during bubble growth and as the contact ring moved back over the TFTC junction during bubble departure. These temperature drops during bubble growth and departure were due to microlayer evaporation and liquid rewetting the heated surface, respectively. Microlayer evaporation was not distinguished as the primary method of heat removal from the surface.;Heaters with sapphire insulation layers did not display the measurable temperature drops observed with the fused silica heaters. The large thermal diffusivity of the sapphire compared to the fused silica was determined as the reason for the absence of these temperature drops. These findings were confirmed by a comparison of temperature drops in a 2-D simulation

Modelling with Transparent Soils: Visualizing Soil Structure Interaction and Multi Phase Flow, Non-Intrusively

Modelling with Transparent Soils: Visualizing Soil Structure Interaction and Multi Phase Flow, Non-Intrusively

$99.98

The fundamental premise of this monograph is that transparent synthetic materials with geotechnical properties similar to those of natural soils can be used to study 3D deformation and flow problems in natural soils. Transparent soils can be made by matching the refractive index of synthetic soil materials and the pore fluid. This monographs presents the geotechnical behaviour of several families of transparent soils that can be combined to meet model-test requirements, in terms of strength, deformation, or permeability.”Modelling with Transparent Soils” demonstrates how an optical system consisting of a laser light, a CCD camera, a frame grabber, and a PC can be used to measure spatial deformations in transparent soil models non-intrusively. Transparent soil models are sliced optically using a laser light sheet. A distinctive speckle pattern is generated by the interaction of the laser light and transparent soil. A 2D deformation field is obtained from two speckle images by using an image processing technique named adaptive cross-correlation, which is an advanced form of the digital image cross-correlation (DIC) algorithm that utilizes both window sizing and window shifting methods. The monograph demonstrates that comparison of 2D deformation fields between transparent soil and natural soil showed that the results were comparable in almost every aspect. Three dimensional fields can be produced by combining multiple 2D fields in Matlab. Multiphase flow and surfactant flushing tests were also simulated using a layered transparent soil systems and several contaminants. The developed technology allows for visualizing the contamination concentration and evaluating the performance of remediation technologies in bench scale model tests.

Practical Handbook on Image Processing for Scientific and Technical Applications

Practical Handbook on Image Processing for Scientific and Technical Applications

$154.84

Image processing is fast becoming a valuable tool for analyzing multidimensional data in all areas of natural science. Since the publication of the best-selling first edition of this handbook, the field of image processing has matured in many of its aspects from ad hoc, empirical approaches to a sound science based on established mathematical and physical principles. The Practical Handbook on Image Processing for Scientific and Technical Applications, Second Edition builds a sound basic knowledge of image processing, provides a critically evaluated collection of the best algorithms, and demonstrates those algorithms with real-world applications from many fields. It covers all aspects of image processing, from image formation to image analysis, and gives an up-to-date review of advanced concepts. Organized according to the hierarchy of tasks, each chapter includes a summary, an outline of the background the task requires, and a section of practical tips that help you avoid common errors and save valuable research time.New in the Second Edition:Expanded application areas now include technical fields such as the automotive industry, quality inspection, and materials scienceMore practical tips in each chapterDiscussion of digital camera interfaces and a comparison of CMOS vs. CCD camerasA section on waveletsAdvanced techniques for reconstruction, new segmentation methods based on global optimization and anisotropic diffusion, and additional classification techniques, including neural networks, polynomial classification, and support vector machinesJust as digital image processing provides the key to studying complex scientific problems that researchers once could only dream of tackling, this handbook unlocks the intricacies of image processing and brings its power and potential within the grasp of researchers across the spectrum of scientific and engineering disciplines.
